Your Super Average Hosts

Bob Christenson

The Artsy Guy
Ga-ga about music, design, and the arts, I'm probably the most scatterbrained, passionate guy in the bunch. I'm the guy that speaks before he thinks and follows my heart when I should probably listen more to my head.

I started in the media production business back in high school when I opened a small recording studio. I began making records for local acts and slowly progressed up the foodchain to regional bands. During this time, I progressed thru school at Michigan State University and obtained a Media Arts degree. Upon completion, I followed my heart and opened a commercial recording studio, tacking the audio industry head on. After a few years of running a studio, I was hired by a major label studio as an in-house engineer and spent my next couple years making records and following my dreams.

About this time, God started tapping me on the shoulder, telling me He wanted more from me. I was tired from the constant clawing to the top of the music business, so I quit suddenly, not knowing what would happen next. About this time, a Gen-X church was hiring a Worship coordinator and media producer position, and I jumped in. After a few years of producing weekly media for this church, I saw the need many churches had for high quality, affordable graphic and web design, so I started Mustardseed Media, Inc.

In the process of working with churches and further identifying their needs, Matt and I started The Geeks and God Podcast where we try and help churches use technology effectively for ministry.

I'm a Super Average guy trying to live the Super Average life that God has blessed me so richly with. I'm married to my high school sweetheart, have a beautiful baby girl, and am truly the most blessed person I know.

I'm super average...and trying to be excellent at very average things.

Dion Garrett

The Suburban Pastor Guy

I live in the very uneventful, predictable, franchise-laden suburbs where I serve as a pastor. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming the suburbs, the "super average" life that I live here suits me perfectly! (though sometimes I do dream of doing a "life swap" with Joe)

I'm married to Jocelyn, the best life partner imaginable and have two beautifully-sassy daughters. I think my family is the only part of my life that rises above the "average" distinction. I'm a blessed man.

Before that, I was born, grew up, went to college, went to seminary, and have done all sorts of not very exciting things. You wouldn't be interested, trust me.

Some days I dream about doing something of "greater significance" and fill my head with fantasies of grandeur, but then I recall what Solomon said, and I remember that there's nothing better than living this average life to the full.

Joe Burnham

The Urban Pastor Guy
The quick version of my bio would tag me as being a child of God, a husband to Anita, Robbie's daddy, a pastor, an author, and a neighbor. In each of these places that I'm called to serve, I seek to be faithful and, well, average.

For those of you who are bored, don't have a life, or need a cure for insomnia, here's something more extensive: I grew up in the Denver suburbs before graduating in 1993 and moving east to attend Concordia University in Seward, NE. I have a bachelors in education, but I also picked up a certificate that resulted in me doing youth ministry in Windsor, CA from January of 1998 to May of 2002.

During the same month I arrived in Windsor, I met Anita. While I didn't clue in for the first couple of years, I realized I was going to marry her one evening in February of 2000. Four months later I told her and she replied with the immortal, "It's about time you figured it out."

Shortly after we were married in June of 2001, I faced another major life decision as the hankering to go to seminary had come out of nowhere and smacked me upside the head. However, for some reason, I was resistant to the idea and spent the first three months of our marriage being irritable as I kept wondering, "Should I stay or should I go now?" Followed by, God, "You've got to let me know, should I stay or should I go?" Again, I should have just asked Anita because, when I told her that I was thinking about going, she again replied, "It's about time you figured it out."

So, in May of 2002, we moved east (if you missed the pattern, I always move east for school ... any suggestions for my doctorate?) to St. Louis so I could attend Concordia Seminary. While there, I experienced an unexpected life change and developed a love for and longing to serve in the urban and online mediums, largely as a result of helping to restart a congregation near Saint Louis University and developing re-yourlife while working at Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Since my seminary days, I've spent my life trying to launch a faith community in Denver's Capitol Hill, writing, and trying to make the Fishbowl a reality.

The other big change in our life came shortly after Anita and I moved into downtown Denver and learned that our son, Robbie, was going to be born. Outside of being parents, together, Anita and I enjoy watching movies, fine dining, going to the theater, and traveling. When apart, I enjoy the outdoors, cheering for the Denver Broncos, being a beer snob, and serving my Capitol Hill neighborhood, while Anita is a musician, linguist, and teacher.

Matt Farina

The Logical Guy
I'm the engineer of the group and that runs to my core. I'm always trying to learn something new, I love to take things apart, I search for logic in everything. If I can build something, design something, or dig into the details of something I need to be pried away for my own good from time to time.

I live a simple life in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan with my wonderful wife Kristin and 2 ferrets. Yes, ferrets. The community we live in can be described as nothing more than your typical burbs. Living here gives us the chance to stay close with all the family and friends we have made.

My day job is working for General Dynamics as an engineer. But, the real fun happens when I leave there. A few years ago I started developing websites alongside Bob. Working with him we decided to start up the Geeks and God podcast where we could talk about technology and the church (two of the things we are most passionate about). Beyond this I blog about technology over at Innovating Tomorrow which is the same name I go under when I do web development.
